Golden Horde
The Golden Horde was one of the largest state formations of the Middle Ages. For a long time, it played a leading role in the life of a number of peoples and had a noticeable influence on the general course of historical development of many Eurasian states. That is why the most important events in the political life of the Golden Horde have attracted the closest attention of contemporaries and have been described on the pages of annals, chronicles, historical works, and official documents.
The Golden Horde occupied a vast territory from the lower reaches of the Danube to the Aral Sea region and from the Caucasus to the southern borders of Rus'. The steppes of the Lower Volga region, including the current territory of Volgograd oblast, which belonged to the Polovtsians before the arrival of the Mongols, and in the second half of the 13th-14th centuries became the political, economic and cultural centre of the Golden Horde. It was here that the vast nomadic possessions of the Golden Horde khans were located, as well as the uluses of their relatives and closest aristocracy.
