Phalera

The second part of the 2nd-1st century B.C.E.

Silver. Gilding.

Diameter: 10.15 cm

Found near Zhutovo railway station, Oktyabrsky Rayon.

Excavations by Valentin Pavlovich Shilov, 1964.

Phalera has a low edge and a slightly convex central part, framed by two relief ridges with oblique notches. The body is ornamented along the edge with chased ovae, made with a special punch. In the center of the phalera there is a rosette with four pairs of alternating laurel and acanthus leaves. The image bears traces of solid gilding.

Phalera is a part of horse harness. It was attached at the intersections of belts and also served as decoration.
