Zoomorphic head

The 5th century B.C.E.

Bone, carving. Length 6.5 cm

Found near the village of Koroli Novoanninskogo rayona.

Excavations by Vladislav Ivanovich Mamontov, 1969.

The bone head is a stylized image of a predatory animal with an open mouth and exposed fangs. The carving marks the folds of the nose, mouth and jaw. Light curls represent the ears and eyes of the animal. The head is hollow inside. It belongs to the range of «animal style» objects, which is a characteristic of the nomadic peoples of the early Iron Age.
