Mirror

The 1st - first half of the 2nd century C.E.

Bronze. Diameter 8.5 cm, disc thickness 0.5 cm.

Found near the village of Baranovka, Kamyshinsky rayon.

Excavations by Igor Viktorovich Sergatskov, 1982.

The ornamented mirror has a four-petal rosette with a loop for hanging in the centre. The edge of the mirror is decorated with an ornament of triangles with their vertices facing upward.

Mirrors were not only household items, but also religious objects. The nomads deliberately damaged many mirrors: they broke, stabbed, and cut them into pieces. This was done so that the part of the soul contained in the mirror could not harm the living.
