Ceramic kantharos

The 1st century C.E.

Red clay, circle, engobe, ornament: men (el barbatine). Bottom diameter 5.5 cm, height 7 cm, rim diameter 8.7 cm.

Found near the village of Pervomaisky in Kalachevsky rayon.

Excavations by Vladislav Ivanovich Mamontov, 1984.

The body of the kantharos is covered with red varnish. The loop handles have straight projections above them. Closer to the upper part of the body there is a molded relief ornament in the form of stylized branches, fruits and leaves.

Such vessels were used in Greece as objects of worship; for the Sarmatian tribes they were a luxury item.
