Amphora

The 1st century B.C.E.

Clay, wheel, polishing. Height 21 cm, corolla diameter 11.5 cm.

Found near the village of Ilyevka, Kalachevsky rayon. Excavations by Vladislav Ivanovich Mamontov, 1978.

The amphora has two handles and a thin rim bent outward. Along the wide part of the body there are three carved circular grooves, from which carved lines - flutes - descend to the bottom.

Ordinary clay amphorae were a mass product, used mainly for transporting and storing olive oil or wine. Reused for burials.
