Mace head

Chalcolithic

Porphyrite, drilling, grinding. Length 9.6 cm, width 5.3 cm.

Accidental find near the village of Aksai, Oktyabrsky rayon, Volgograd oblast.

The head of the mace is zoomorphic, polished. The front of the figurine is a stylized animal's face. The eyes and nostrils are indicated by dimples. The opposite hammer-shaped part schematically conveys the body of the animal with a relief frame. Scientists consider such heads in burials to be an indicator of a person’s high status during life.
